Resident Education & Training
Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotation prepares residents to be leaders in community practice or academic medicine in emergency medicine and pediatrics. We provide comprehensive training in the emergency evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages and educate residents in the care of a broad range of pediatric patients from common acute to emergent pediatric conditions. With a diverse patient population and experienced faculty who enjoy teaching, residents progress through increasingly supervisory roles to become exceptional clinicians in both Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine.
Residency training includes both clinical and didactic curriculum, providing a broad educational experience that allows our graduates to confidently manage their youngest patients.
Clinical rotations for EM Residents:
- 2 dedicated months in the Pediatric ED
- Supplemental longitudinal shifts throughout residency
Our residents have gone on to complete pediatric emergency medicine fellowships and serve as chiefs of pediatric emergency medicine.
Care Beyond the Emergency Department
Operating since 1985, UW Health Med Flight is among the most well-known and respected critical care transport services in the country and provides world-class scene and inter-facility critical care transport services for Wisconsin, northern Illinois, eastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota. Med Flight is one of the only helicopter EMS (HEMS) programs in the United States staffed by attending physicians on every flight. A team of 30 physicians operates three twin-engine aircraft with state-of-the-art aviation technology alongside an experienced pilot and nurse.
UW is one of the few programs in the U.S. to provide high-impact HEMS training to residents and fellows where they manage critically ill and injured adult, pediatric and neonatal patients.
Our helicopters have enhanced flight and safety features, and each carries advanced medical equipment and emergency medications. Our critical care ambulances transport patients of any age. We can bring specialized care teams, and essentially the resources of a mobile ICU to patients and safely transport them to a hospital or higher or level of care that best suits the patient’s needs. This includes newborns who need care in a NICU until they are strong enough for lifesaving surgery or a procedure.
We focus on helping you get the best possible medical care quickly and safely, and on stabilizing patients while being transported to get the care they need at a hospital or facility that best meets the patient’s needs. We take great pride in partnering with many hospitals in the region.
