Focus on POCUS: Next Level is great next step for participants of our introductory Focus on POCUS: Ultrasound for the Acutely Ill Patient course.

This advanced course is ideal for clinicians who want to expand their basic point-of-care ultrasound skills. Participants should be confident with basic cardiac, lung and abdominal imaging.

Course Overview

Intended audience: Participants should be comfortable with basic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills, including basic cardiac, lung and abdominal imaging, who want to expand their ultrasound skills. Enrollment is open to UW Health affiliated physicians and advanced practice providers.

Course content: Topics covered will include cardiac function, wall motion abnormalities, right ventricular function and resuscitative cardiac ultrasound, as well as pulmonary edema, lung consolidation, gastric ultrasound, and other abdominal ultrasound applications.

Course structure: This one-day course includes a unique blend of hands-on and lecture-based instruction, as well as 6+ hours of available asynchronous learning.

Outcomes: Participants should be interested in expanding their skills in acquiring and interpreting POCUS of advanced cardiac, lung, abdomen, as well as vascular findings. Participants will have the opportunity to obtain 15-20 proctored ultrasound exams.

CME/CCE: The UW–Madison Interprofessional Continuing Education Partnership will award continuing education credit dependent upon individual participation in course.

8:30-9:00 Advanced physics (doppler, and artifacts of note)
9:00-10:00 Advanced cardiac ultrasound

10:10-12:20 Hands-on chest ultrasound
12:20-1:20 Lunch & Lectures:
• Abdominal ultrasound (aorta and renal)
• Abdominal ultrasound (gastric and free fluid)
• DVT ultrasound
10 min Break
1:30-5:00 Hands-on abdominal, cardiac and DVT ultrasound

Plus, asynchronous learning on topics such as utilizing TTE (transthoracic echo) of the left heart: diastology, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, stroke volume assessment; TTE basic valve assessment: endocarditis, mitral regurgitation and aortic stenosis; and advanced lung assessment: edema, interstitial lung disease, consolidation, effusion, and pneumonia.
