Faculty, alumni, and student research scholars of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine presented at the 2021 Global Health Symposium, a virtual conference of UW-Madison’s Global Health Institute.
Amber M. Sheth, a summer Shapiro research scholar and third-year medical student at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, received best virtual presentation honors for her poster, “Assessing emergency care needs of an indigenous community in rural Guatemala.”
The Shapiro Summer Research Program consists of 8-10 weeks of mentored research conducted in the summer between M1 and M2 years. EM faculty Jim Svenson, MD, MS and Jessica Schmidt, MD, MPH were faculty mentors for Amber’s research project. Watch the presentation online or review the poster presentation slides.
The Symposium also featured a COVID and Health Equity panel hosted by GHI Associate Director Janis P. Tupesis, MD. UWEM residency alumnus Christopher Ford, MD, as a member of the panel discussing health disparities and social determinants of health in the Milwaukee area. Dr. Ford currently serves as the education director for Infinity Healthcare in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The panel also included physicians working closely with Native and Latinx communities in the state.
