Dr. Michael Pulia invited to present at American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders Meet the Masters Event

Michael PuliaMichael Pulia, MD, MS was invited to present at the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (ABSSD) annual Meet the Masters Event.

The event is an ongoing continuing education course which consists of seven pre-recorded sessions from dysphagia experts to provide timely, critical information about the assessment and treatment of dysphagia during the COVID pandemic.

Dr. Pulia’s session, “SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19: A Primer for Deglutologists,” provided a broad overview of the pathophysiology underlying SARS-COV-2/CoVID-19 and its clinical manifestations. Registration for the course is available and ongoing.

As Director of the Emergency Care for Infectious Diseases (EC-ID) research program at UW/UW Health, Dr. Pulia’s focuses on improving the management of infectious diseases in the emergency department, with an emphasis on systems engineering guided interventions. Since the onset of the pandemic, Dr. Pulia has shifted his focus to COVID-19, especially the widespread use of antibiotics to treat COVID-19 and resulting risk of increased bacterial resistance, an issue increasingly recognized as a parallel public health crisis to the ongoing pandemic.

In addition to multiple ongoing research projects and publications, Dr. Pulia serves as a content expert on the Dysphagia Research Society COVID-19 Taskforce and is a nationally recognized expert in the management of resistant bacterial infections, sepsis, skin infections, pneumonia and urinary tract infections. He also serves as the Director of Emergency Medicine Antimicrobial Stewardship for UW Health and was recently invited to serve on the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Emergency Department Antibiotic Stewardship Guideline Committee.
