Dr. Azita G. Hamedani is the founding chair of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine. After returning to her home state of Wisconsin in 2006, she held several leadership roles before being named chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine in 2009 and the department’s inaugural chair in 2014.

During her tenure, Dr. Hamedani led significant growth in the department’s residency and fellowship programs, clinical enterprise, and research portfolio. More importantly, many of the faculty she recruited have ascended to significant institutional leadership positions, locally and nationally.

After she stepped down as chair in 2022, the department’s endowed chair position was renamed The Azita G. Hamedani Distinguished Chair of Emergency Medicine in recognition of her lasting contributions to the department, UW Health, and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Hamedani returned to the UW in 2026 after serving as vice dean for clinical affairs at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and president of UNC Health Faculty Physicians. She is currently the chief clinical officer at Bunkerhill Health, where she is helping bring an agentic AI platform to health systems, and was named one of 100 Women in HealthTech for 2026.
