The UW Department of Emergency Medicine’s research training program cultivates learners and faculty who want to develop careers in emergency medicine research. Our experienced faculty provides guidance and critical evaluation of research performance and productivity to help learners gain valuable skills to pursue scholarship.
Our research fellowship program offers outstanding research opportunities in translational and clinical research within our department, at the School of Medicine and Public Health and across campus. Our two-year fellowship program is approved by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and offers a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to obtain an NIH or AHRQ career development award.
Our residency program’s research opportunities include a rotating research curriculum covering high-yield, practical topics that help trainees develop the skills necessary to critically appraise research literature and complete a scholarly project prior to graduation. Topics may include how to conduct a literature review, design a research study, conduct data analysis, or understand and assess biases and confounding factors.
Student research is a vital component of the educational mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Through the Shapiro Summer Research Program at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, our faculty mentor and support students between their M1 and M2 years through a summer research project, which typically results in subsequent conference presentations and/or publications.
Our faculty also dedicate time to supporting aspiring researchers through the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program at UW–Madison.
