Position Overview
The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at UW–Madison invites board-certified and board-eligible emergency physicians to join our academic faculty. Candidates with experience in education or emergency ultrasound are especially encouraged to apply.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers strong opportunities for career growth and leadership, supported by mentorship, administrative resources, and close collaboration with institutional and health system leaders.
Clinical Environment
The Department of Emergency Medicine provides emergency care for more than 128,000 patients each year across a broad range of clinical settings, serving as a regional resource for patients and communities throughout the Upper Midwest.
Our physicians care for medically complex patients while helping to shape clinical practice across UW Health, the integrated health system affiliated with UW–Madison. As health care continues to evolve, UW Health is preparing for what comes next by evaluating and integrating emerging technologies into clinical care, including artificial intelligence, ambient documentation, predictive analytics, and clinical decision support.
Located in central Madison, our flagship emergency department (ED) at University Hospital cares for over 70,000 adult and pediatric patients annually. The 505-bed Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center is one of two academic medical centers in the state and a leading organ transport hospital nationally. It has been ranked Wisconsin’s No. 1 hospital by U.S. News & World Report for 15 consecutive years and serves as a major referral center for patients with complex, high-acuity illness and injury.
Faculty also practice across several distinct clinical environments. East Madison Hospital is home to a high-volume, 20-bed community ED that cares for 44,000 adult and pediatric patients annually and is designated as a Level IV Trauma Center and Acute Stroke Ready Hospital. Additional sites include the five-star William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and the Pediatric ED at American Family Children’s Hospital, where nearly 18,000 children each year receive specialized, family-centered emergency care.
Our flight physicians staff UW Health Med Flight, one of the few air medical services in the U.S. to fly with an attending physician on board, and are recognized worldwide as expert clinicians and educators in critical care transport and retrieval medicine.
In 2027, we will expand emergency departments at University Hospital and East Madison Hospital — an important milestone that reflects our growth and commitment to supporting patients and care teams.
Department Divisions
Our robust divisions advance patient care as recognized leaders across the UW Health system in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), critical care, informatics and AI, pediatrics, simulation, global and social emergency medicine, and prehospital medicine.
Our POCUS program is well established, with robust quality assurance processes and strong engagement in global and prehospital settings. The program hosts highly regarded regional POCUS workshops each year and is a respected leader in ultrasound collaboration across the institution.
