The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine, the emergency departments at UW Health, and UW Health Med Flight employ many current and retired members of the United States military.

This Veterans Day, UW Health and the Department of Emergency Medicine took to social media to thank and recognize our nation’s veterans for their sacrifices to preserve our freedoms. Highlights from this weekend’s announcements include:

“The transition from active military service to civilian life is not insignificant and is unique for each veteran with professional and personal challenges that are influenced by their experiences in the military,” said Ryan Newberry, DO, MPH. “Fortunately, Med Flight was very supportive in helping me make that transition successfully.”

For one of the department’s active service members, emergency medicine was an unexpected destination.

First-year resident and Captain in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, Dr. Gregory Raupp joined the Army ROTC as a University of Wisconsin-Madison undergrad and completed his Master of Social Work degree at Fayetteville State University. While working in Behavioral Health, he became interested in how physicians approached patient care and applied to medical school at the University of Wisconsin.
