Focus on POCUS: Mentor Program

The Focus on POCUS: Mentor Program provides longitudinal feedback and mentorship to UW Health-affiliated providers who are training in point-of-care ultrasound.

This ABMS accredited Process Improvement Activity is ideal for physicians looking to hone their skills in a specific ultrasound indication, with direct support and feedback from our expert faculty physicians. Participants should be confident in performing basic POCUS scan application in the indication for which they are seeking mentorship.

We are currently accepting participants. Interested mentees must complete a screening application and will be invited to enroll in the program upon a successful application review.

Program Overview

Available indications: Lung ultrasound

Program aims: This hands-on program provides participants with the opportunity to perform POCUS scans on UW Health patients in the emergency department and submit POCUS images for expert review by faculty mentors. To support their learning, participants have access to six hours of supplemental POCUS continuing medical education material.

Program structure: The course begins with an orientation led by faculty mentors, introducing participants to the POCUS workflow in the emergency department and quality standards required for selected exams. Scans will be conducted at the East Madison Hospital Emergency Department or other designated sites with ultrasound machines that archive images to QPathE. To ensure accuracy, all scans must be completed under direct faculty supervision or supported by confirmatory imaging, such as radiology-performed CT, MRI, or ultrasound.

Following submission, faculty mentors will review the POCUS exams and provide detailed feedback. These results will also be recorded in QPathE, with analytics available on a monthly basis for performance tracking. To successfully complete this program, participants must perform at least 25 technically adequate, complete, and correctly interpreted POCUS exams per chosen indication within six months of enrollment.

CME credits: The UW–Madison Interprofessional Continuing Education Partnership will award continuing education credit dependent upon individual participation in this program.
