The University of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to offer an innovative and rigorous fellowship program in emergency department administration, quality, and leadership.
The fellowship objectives are based on best practices in Emergency Department (ED) operations and leadership and are tailored to cultivate each fellow’s skills to become a leader in this field.
The fellowship is ideal for emergency medicine residency graduates interested in developing the analytical and management skills necessary for leadership roles in administration, quality, patient safety, and operations within an ED, hospital or healthcare system. Fellows work directly with Quality & Operations leadership to advance knowledge and skills to approach day-to day ED operations, with a complete view of patient safety, cost effectiveness, efficient flow principles, patient experience, and change management.
To gain operational experience, fellows regularly attend departmental and hospital operations meetings and work closely with the fellowship director to develop skills in the interpretation and presentation of operational data. Additional learning opportunities focused on finance, coding, and billing are available.
Our curriculum emphasizes a thorough quality focus from which fellows acquire skills to develop and lead quality improvement projects, learn skills to manage a portfolio of projects including key performance indicators, and participate in our department’s Performance Improvement Committee. Fellows also gain experience from involvement in our department’s peer review process, including serving on the department’s Peer Review Committee and helping to coordinate a monthly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference.
Fellows are expected to engage in scholarly activity around quality improvement projects that they lead in the emergency department and have the opportunity to participate in resident education by facilitating a quality- or leadership-focused educational grand rounds. A generous budget is also provided for fellows to attend national conferences focused on individual career and educational goals.
Career Outlook
Fellowship differentiation is becoming increasingly important in the Emergency Medicine job market. Graduates of our ED Administration, Quality, and Leadership Fellowship will be well positioned in a competitive job market to directly fill Medical Director or Assistant Medical Director roles at academic and community sites.
Compensation & Benefits
Comprehensive health and supplemental benefits, a competitive salary, travel funds, and education support are offered.
