Administration, Quality, and Leadership Fellowship

The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine offers an innovative and rigorous fellowship in emergency department administration, quality, and leadership.

Grounded in best practices in ED operations and management, the program is designed to develop each fellow’s leadership skills and prepare them to excel as future leaders in emergency medicine.

The fellowship is ideal for emergency medicine residency graduates who want to build the analytical and management skills needed to lead in emergency department, hospital, or health system settings. Fellows work directly with Quality & Operations leadership to gain hands-on experience in day-to-day ED management, developing a comprehensive understanding of patient safety, cost effectiveness, efficient patient flow, experience, and change management.

To deepen operational expertise, fellows regularly attend departmental and hospital operations meetings and collaborate with the fellowship director to strengthen their skills in interpreting and presenting operational data. Additional learning opportunities in finance, coding, and billing are also available.

Our curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in quality improvement. Fellows learn to design and lead QI projects, manage portfolios of initiatives and key performance indicators, and actively participate in the department’s Performance Improvement Committee. They also gain valuable experience through the peer review process — serving on the Peer Review Committee and helping to coordinate the department’s monthly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference.

Fellows are expected to engage in scholarly work centered on the quality improvement projects they lead and have opportunities to contribute to resident education by facilitating a quality- or leadership-focused grand rounds. A generous budget is also provided for fellows to attend national conferences focused on individual career and educational goals.
