Congratulations to Dr. Joshua Glazer of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine who has been selected for a 2020 UW Health Physician Excellence Award. These prestigious peer-nominated awards recognize UW Health’s most skilled and dedicated physicians who demonstrate exceptional performance in clinical practice, education or regional services and a commitment to UW Health’s mission, vision and values.
Joshua Glazer, MD (Medical Director, UW Health East Madison Hospital and Emergency Medicine Critical Care) will receive the Rising Star Leadership Award. This award honors outstanding physicians who demonstrate exceptional and measurable contributions to clinical practice and education outside of their department and in institution-wide work, as well as demonstrating a contribution to the community through community service activities that extend beyond discipline-specific professional activities.
In just three years, Dr. Glazer has been a trailblazer for the Department of Emergency Medicine and UW Health, and his strong interest in critical care serves a unique and valuable niche for emergency medicine. He truly is a rising star and an outstanding leader.
At East Madison Hospital, he quickly took over the reins as emergency department medical director and also successfully developed and implemented a plan to create an intensive care unit. He calmly met several challenges that required him to change direction and engaged many disciplines throughout the planning.
He also developed a “Crash E-CPR” and ECMO program to bridge the gaps between Dane County EMS and hospital teams to improve outcomes for patients suffering cardiac arrest outside the hospital. We’ve had nine E-CPR/ECMO activations since July 2019, including a young adult with severe hypothermia who would not have survived without this program.
He has truly been the “go-to guy” helping the East Madison Hospital emergency department plan for and manage patient care during the pandemic and specifically for COVID-positive patients. He created guidelines to provide decision support around testing and case management, including working collaboratively with our home health team. He worked closely with the East Madison Hospital triad to spearhead a plan to provide COVID-19 care and accommodate 50 ICU patients if needed.
Dr. Glazer’s leadership style and his “can do” attitude inspires confidence in all those who work with him.
