New Faculty Q&A: Dr. Kyle Schoppel

Q&A with Kyle Schoppel (he/him), assistant professor of emergency medicine in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Kyle SchoppelHometown: Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

Educational background: After I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology at Amherst College, I attended the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed my pediatrics residency at UMass Medical School, where I served as chief resident my final year. I then pursued fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine at Boston Medical Center before serving as a clinical assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine/Riley Hospital for Children.

Do you have an area of clinical interest, and how did you get into it? I am particularly interested in medical simulation — specifically, when used to educate resident physicians and prehospital providers. I first became interested in simulation during residency and helped to develop my program’s first longitudinal simulation curricula during my chief resident year. Since, I have tried to expand my expertise as an educator and researcher. Clinically, I am also passionate about point-of-care ultrasound. I have literally seen it save lives, so I am trying to grow as an ultrasonographer!

ELI5: How would you describe your work to a 5-year-old? I take care of kids when they get sick or hurt. Sometimes we give medicines or use special band-aids to make them feel better. We have lots of toys, stickers and popsicles.

What attracted you to UW–Madison? The institutional focus on faculty development, collaboration and wellness.

What do you hope trainees will learn from you and your work? Do what you would do for your own kid/family member, always give appropriate analgesia and anxiolysis, and never be afraid to ask for help.

What are some things you are excited to do/visit/try, being new to the Madison area? So far we have enjoyed biking as a family and checking out the farmers’ markets and kids attractions! We are looking forward to all of the outdoor ice rinks!
