UW Health recently announced the appointment of Dr. Brian Sharp to the position of Medical Director of Patient Safety and Quality, effective June 1, 2023. Dr. Sharp’s extensive experience in healthcare administration, leadership, and patient safety will play a crucial role in further enhancing the quality of care and patient safety initiatives at UW Health.
In this new role, Dr. Sharp will collaborate closely with UW Health’s Director of Patient Safety and Quality to ensure patient safety across all locations within the UW Health healthcare system. He will also oversee clinical quality, registries, regulatory readiness, and accreditation processes.
Dr. Sharp brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this position. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. Following that, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan, where he also participated in a graduate medical education scholars program in healthcare administration.
During his tenure at UW Health, Dr. Sharp has held several key leadership positions, including Medical Director of the Emergency Department at East Madison Hospital and Associate Vice Chair of Quality for the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine. Most recently, he served as the Patient Safety Officer for UW Health, spearheading various efforts to improve the safety culture and minimize preventable patient harm. Dr. Sharp played an instrumental role in enhancing root cause analysis programs, safety event reporting platforms, and the establishment of Just Culture at UW Health. He collaborated with other critical stakeholders, including the patient experience team, diversity, equity and inclusion team, and Provider Wellbeing team, to strengthen patient safety initiatives.
In his expanded role as Medical Director of Patient Safety and Quality, Dr. Sharp will continue his work in leading patient safety while taking on additional responsibilities. UW Health is dedicated to delivering the highest quality and safest patient care, and Dr. Sharp’s expertise will ensure the alignment of quality and safety structures with UW Health – Northern Illinois.
Dr. Sharp’s commitment to healthcare administration and patient safety extends beyond UW Health. He has served as the chair of the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety section of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and currently holds positions on the Quality and Patient Safety Committee within ACEP. Dr. Sharp is also the President of ACEP’s Wisconsin chapter and serves as a Councilor to ACEP’s national body.
