The National Science Foundations reports that the University of Wisconsin–Madison now ranks sixth nationally for research expenditures. Since 2018, it has ranked 8th out of 920 public and private universities.

For the first time, the university has topped $1.7 billion in research expenditures, according to the NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD). Nearly half of the total expenditures comes from federal and institutional awards, the university also relies on state and local government, industry, non-profit and foundation support.

“UW–Madison’s research success, as evidenced by the HERD Survey, includes collaborative efforts to connect faculty to more funding opportunities,” said Vice Chancellor for Research Dorota Brzezinska.
