A Phoenix native, Dr. Hakes graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix and completed her residency at the University of Wisconsin, where she served as chief resident in her final year. After completing an administrative fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, she left the state to practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico for several years before returning to UW. Her academic interests include addiction medicine, quality improvement, and urologic emergencies.

Outside of medicine she is passionate about food and wine, animal rescue and fostering, music and dance, as well as hiking and enjoying the outdoors. She and her husband (a urologist) have a hobby farm with three potbellied pigs in addition to their dog and six cats.
