Dr. Jeff Pothof undertook his emergency medicine residency training at the University of Michigan, where he completed a Graduate Medical Education Scholars Program in Healthcare Administration and served as a chief resident in his final year. After returning to Madison, he has served in several leadership positions with the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine, including Vice Chair of Quality and Operations and Service Chief of Emergency Services for the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital. Prior, he held Director of Quality and Clinical Service Chief positions when emergency medicine was still a clinical division within the Department of Medicine until 2014.

In 2016, Dr. Pothof took a system-level position at UW Health as Medical Director for Quality before moving to his current role as Chief Quality Officer in 2018. Dr. Pothof continues to practice clinically in emergency departments at University Hospital and East Madison Hospital, and with UW Health Med Flight as a flight physician since 2010.

Throughout his career, Dr. Pothof has been actively involved with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), one of the largest professional organization of emergency medicine physicians in the United States. He served on the board of directors for ACEP’s Wisconsin chapter for many years and was recognized with the chapter’s Distinguished Service Award in 2022. Dr. Pothof is a past chair of the ACEP Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Section and previously served on the Quality and Patient Safety Committee.

Dr. Pothof’s clinical interests include quality and patient safety, lean management in health care, health system capacity management solutions, and reduction in health care-associated conditions. In his free time, he enjoys fishing and traveling with his family.
