Joshua Ross, MD, serves as interim president and chief medical officer of American Family Children’s Hospital and UW Health Kids, and interim system vice president for pediatric services at UW Health.

A pediatric emergency medicine physician and professor in the departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, he provides strategic leadership to advance pediatric care, strengthen clinical integration, and improve access and patient experiences across UW Health’s pediatric system of care.

Since joining UW Health in 2009, Dr. Ross has held numerous clinical and administrative leadership roles, including medical director and division chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and executive vice chair of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine. He has led major expansions of pediatric emergency services, introduced innovative clinical workflows, and helped develop medical simulation and education programs. His academic interests include interprofessional simulation, electronic health record innovation, team dynamics, and patient safety.

Dr. Ross completed his pediatrics residency, chief residency, and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hospital (now Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago), affiliated with Northwestern University. He has received numerous honors for excellence in clinical care and teaching, including the UW Health Physician Excellence Award in Clinical Leadership and recognition as a Madison Magazine Top Doctor.

Known for his collaborative leadership, Dr. Ross is committed to building high-performing teams, fostering professional satisfaction, and advancing innovative, high-quality care for children and families.
