Dr. Joshua Ross is the Chief Medical Officer for the American Family Children’s Hospital and UW Health Kids. He led the opening of the BerbeeWalsh Emergency Department expansion in November 2016, which not only realized the needed growth in physical facilities but also implemented innovative workflows to improve patient flow and care. His academic interests include using interprofessional simulation and EHR innovation to promote patient safety.

Dr. Ross has led multiple grant-funded projects and subsequent publications. Most recently, he was co-PI on a $2.5 million AHRQ-funded study to develop and facilitate simulations optimizing health information technology to improve patient safety and communication in transitions of care for pediatric trauma patients. Dr. Ross was also co-PI on a PCORI funded $700K project titled, “Disseminating Child Abuse Clinical Decision Support to Improve Detection, Evaluation, and Reporting.”

Prior to arriving at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Ross completed his pediatric emergency medicine fellowship, chief residency, and residency at the Children’s Memorial Hospital affiliated with Northwestern University. In his previous role as the Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, he led the Pediatric ED through two significant expansions. He has received multiple departmental awards for excellence in clinical care and teaching, including being recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Madison Magazine. As a graduate of the UW Medical Foundation’s Physician Leadership Development Program, Dr. Ross is focused on ensuring UW Health Kids services continue to provide the highest quality of care for patients and families at the American Family Children’s Hospital. He strives to cultivate a culture of excellence and professional satisfaction for the entire healthcare team.
