About the Division
The Division of Informatics advances clinical informatics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital tools to improve emergency care.
The division designs, evaluates, and helps govern technologies used in emergency and prehospital care, with a focus on how they affect patient care, clinician workflow, and health system operations.
Established in 2026, the division brings together informatics work across clinical care, education, research, and health system governance. It serves as the department’s home for clinical informatics and applied artificial intelligence (AI), and connects that work with UW Health’s enterprise informatics and AI programs and research partners across UW–Madison.
What is clinical informatics?
Clinical informatics uses health data, information systems, and digital technologies to improve health care. In emergency medicine, that includes the electronic health record, clinical decision support, operational analytics, AI, and tools that connect information across the emergency care system.
Effective informatics tools help clinicians find the right information at the right time, make better-informed decisions, and spend more time with patients. The division studies not only what technology can do, but whether it works safely and effectively in real clinical environments.
