Phase 1 Students
Upstream from the ED is an innovative educational experience for medical students during their first months of medical school. Through active, experience-based assignments and faculty-led small group discussions students discover many factors influencing health and well-being, and the factors that cause patients to present to the Emergency Department. These themes are longitudinal, extending beyond medical school to a lifelong career in medicine.
In addition to above, other goals include: begin to recognize the distinction between population and individual approaches to health, appreciate the impacts of multiple systems on health, and develop an understanding of patient perspectives.
What will the students be doing in the ED?
This is meant to be an experience for the students to observe the intersection of clinical medicine and public health. The students will interview patients to gather information regarding “determinants of health” and how these determinants influence the patients’ current presentation and their disease process(es) in general.
